Talladega Nights (and Days!) for Regional Paramedical Services

For more than six years, paramedics from Regional Paramedical Services (RPS), a private EMS organization based in Jasper Alabama, have served as first responders at the Talladega Superspeedway—touted as the “biggest, fastest and most competitive superspeedway in the world.”

Being an integral part of an event that boasts a 2.66 mile NASCAR oval (the longest of its kind) and has a seating capacity of 175,000 spectators is no small operation. RPS posts as many as 13 units at a time in the infield, outside the tracks, and on the campgrounds and provides as many as 10 additional units to staff the track itself. Shifts begin at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday and run continuously through 2:00 p.m. on Monday. RPS paramedics busily treat a variety of patients from drivers to fans to workers suffering from collisions, burns, assault, falls—virtually anything one can imagine might take place during a long weekend at the race track.

When asked whether the job is coveted by his team, Chris Key, Operations Manager at RPS, replied, “Yes, definitely. Track dispatch is posted close to the grandstand, so it works out really well. When they’re not busy, paramedics can see over the fence from within the truck. They enjoy that.” Key went on to describe how the partnership has given his organization more visibility in the community: “Until RPS took over the contract as sole provider, it was split among several different services. RPS proved to be the most reliable—it was the only organization that has been able to pull off providing a single service at Talladega.”

With more than 80 ambulances and 600 employees, Regional Paramedical Services runs 70,000 calls annually in nine counties across Alabama. Kudos to RPS for the work they are doing in their state and for the Talladega Superspeedway.
